A Note From the Editor-Curator
This is the inaugural post for compatible baggage, an idea I’ve had bouncing around for a few months. I am fortunate enough to interact with a lot of people who are engaging some very profound ideas with their work, be it academically or artistically (is there a difference?). To this end, I decided I wanted a place that engaged ideas on the level of an academic journal but was accessible and flexible in the way that the contemporary moment requires. A space that engaged fiction, poetry, visual art and high social theory on the same plane. As well, I did not want to be limited to the textual density of a stereotypical journal. I wanted a space for experimentation and synthesis. A forum for ideas. Fragments. Incompleteness. Compatible Baggage is not peer-reviewed, it is curated in the very interest of this vagary.
This is not a publication without focus or theme though. Compatible Baggage is intended to be suited and directed towards specific issues of the present. Things that could only be happening right now. Beyond that though, there is only my own discernment. This is not to be an unbridled space but a way to discuss a specific, though less bounded, perspective on the world.
Compatible Baggage is a blog that is updated regularly but it is also (hopefully) going to be a quarterly publication. A concretization of its own immateriality.
Submissions of all formats welcome and encouraged.
ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
I would be remiss to not mention the inspiration and impetus to actually undertake this project is owed entirely to Canonball and “Girls at Their Best”, a zine currently being compiled by my good friend Tali (SUBMIT girlsattheirbest[AT]gmail.com). As well, a great debt is owed to countless friends and acquaintances who have inspired or tolerated overly weighty and manic conversations about esoteric and ephemeral things.
